I'm Yashaswini Kishore Modak and I'm in BVetMed (five year) year 1.
I'm 18 years old and interested in wildlife conservation. One of my goals to accomplish as a veterinary professional is preventing birds of paradise and wild macaws from going extinct. I love going for runs and playing the piano in my free time, and used to enjoy debating and Model UN in high school.
Upon speaking to the student ambassadors and a course rep, I got the impression that this job would involve cross-communication, event coordination, empathy, and in general people skills. I have had experience with planning a workshop from scratch in 2017, and between budget management, logistics, and delegating tasks and deadlines, organizing that event threw me into the world of professional skills in a way that no other experience would. Despite being hectic, I found the experience of event coordination extremely gratifying. Additionally, I have in the past actively pushed myself to be better at public speaking, negotiation, and generally handling crowds of people. I have had moments during my event planning where crowds overwhelmed me, but I handled it by re-evaluating the way I delegated work and managed time, and saw a concerted improvement. I definitely have more to learn about it, but I've already made and learnt from many mistakes and would be excited for the opportunity to plan events again.
Additionally, I am very passionate about my course and RVC. This college has provided me with many social and academic opportunities that I never had in Singapore due to resource availability (there are no vet schools in Singapore). For example, my first time seeing a live cow was when I moved into College Grove! I know that the SU has helped significantly with making RVC the enriching place that it is today, and it would thrill me if I could provide that opportunity filled environment for other students who share my passion. Part of this enrichment process is feedback, and from my work as a chair for Model UN, I have already had to learn how to give constructive and realistic feedback.
